Belize is a great little country, that quickly became one of my favorite destinations. Despite its small size, it offers a lot of diversity. Amazing coral reef with world class snorkeling, beautiful beaches, Mayan Ruins, jungles and caves: all that to be experienced in this small country in Central America. When we decided to visit Belize, we knew we wanted to experience both the jungle and the water. We had plenty of snorkeling and boating awaiting during our sailing adventure with Raggamuffin Tours, so we decided to make San Ignacio our first stop. I then began my search for the perfect jungle lodge in Belize.
I quickly learned, that there is no shortage of nice jungle accommodations in Belize. There were certain things I was looking for: a hotel tucked away in a jungle, but close enough to San Ignacio town. I wanted comfort without the shocking price tag. A location on the river would be nice too. Table Rock ticked off all the boxes and we booked a 3 night stay in this jungle lodge in Belize. I’m not going to lie, the fact, that there were pet donkeys on the property sealed the deal for me.

What’s it like to stay in a jungle lodge in Belize
About Table Rock Jungle Lodge
Table Rock is a beautiful jungle lodge in Belize, in Cayo district to be precise. Even though situated on 105 acres, it’s quite intimate with just 10 cabanas. Besides the accommodations, the property has a working farm, an orchard and pet donkeys. Table Rock Jungle resort is an eco lodge in its true meaning. The owners Colleen and Alan, are committed to running a place that is as eco-friendly as possible. Their electricity is 100% sun generated, water is supplied with rain water and a lot of their food served in the restaurant grows in their garden and comes from their property.
Property
As our taxi took us through the main entrance and we went down a dusty road, lined with tall palm trees, we knew we were in for a treat. We passed an orchard with orange and mango trees, and quite a few donkeys grazing on the grass in between them. A short few moments later, we ended up at a place that I could only describe a jungle paradise.
The grounds are beautiful and meticulously kept. There are lots of trails among many beautiful tropical flowers and plants. It’s extremely peaceful and relaxing. The only sounds were birds and howler monkeys in the distance. And if you’ve never heard a howler monkey, you are in for a treat. If the place wasn’t perfect enough, they just added a beautiful infinity pool.
Accommodations
There are only 10 cabanas on the property, with different comfort and price levels. Rates vary depending on the choice of the cabana, and the time of year you visit. Check out all the options and pricing.
We opted for one of the 3 riverside cabanas . They are the most secluded ones, and have great views of the Macal River from the little decks. The room was very spacious and comfortable. Windows have screens only, so you fall asleep and wake up to the sounds of birds and howler monkeys.
Besides the comfort of the room, I really liked the added touches. Plenty of filtered water in the room, a couple of little gifts like a local hot sauce and a tiny bottle of rum. There was also a cutting board with a knife to cut your fruit, that we were encouraged to pick from the orchard. All these little accents made for a very comfortable stay.

Things to know before you stay at Table Rock Jungle Lodge
As an eco lodge, sustainability is very important for Table Rock’s owners: Colleen and Alan. They take pride in having created a place, that is eco friendly without compromising on the comfort. Their place is amazing, and I can’t recommend it enough, but there are certain things you need to know before you book your stay.
- the rooms have no regular power outlets, just USB ports. They are sufficient for charging your phone, but not bigger electronics i.e. camera charger. There is a regular power outlet in the Palapa, near the restaurant, that you are welcome to use.
- you can’t use a hair dryer or flat/curling iron in your room
- there’s no TV in any of the rooms
- there is no AC in rooms, but the ceiling fans are sufficient enough
- Internet is limited, and available only from 7 am – 7 pm
- you are in the middle of the jungle, so you might come across some bugs or wildlife
Food at Table Rock Jungle Lodge
Table Rock has a full kitchen, so you can have all your meals there, if you choose to. There is a lot to do in the area, so most people venture out for the day, ending up having some of their meals in town. Prior to our visit we received a form to fill, to say whether we were interested in having meals in the restaurant on site. This information is basically to give them heads up, how much food will be needed. This is a farm to table kind of restaurant, and with all the ingredients fresh, it prevents the food waste.
We had breakfast at the Lodge each day, but split other meals between San Ignacio town and the restaurant on site. Everything we did have at Table Rock was absolutely delicious. The meals might have been a bit more pricey, than what it would cost in town, but it was well worth the price. The quality of food is top notch, and everything is prepared using fresh and local ingredients. If you factor in the taxi cost into town, it’s actually a great deal.
The Farm
There is a working farm on the property, which means a lot of food served in the restaurant will be as fresh and local as can be. Eggs are straight from the chicken farm, the herbs and vegetables used for cooking, grow in their garden. The juice served with your breakfast comes from freshly squeezed oranges and mangoes from the orchard. You’re encouraged to try fruit right off the trees, but obviously you’re asked to pick just what you are going you eat.
Resident donkeys
I will not lie, as an animal lover, the pet donkeys on the property were a highlight for me. They are very friendly and really enjoy having visitors, especially if you bring them food scraps. Just ask the kitchen staff if there’s anything leftover.
Water activities
One thing we really enjoyed at the lodge, was having Macal River literally in our backyard. We made sure to take advantage of the kayaks and tubes available for the guests’ use. We spent one afternoon kayaking over to Chaa Creek resort nearby to enjoy a couple of cocktails and their pool. That was before Table Rock added a gorgeous infinity pool on their property.
As much as there is to see in and around San Ignacio, it would be a shame not to spend time on the Table Rock’s property, given all the amazing amenities. We spent one day exploring Xanantunich Mayan Ruins and the town, but reserved most of the second day for spending it at the lodge. Between the donkeys, kayaks and hiking trails there was plenty to do to fill our day.
Attractions nearby
Table Rock Lodge is in the prime location to experience some of the top attractions in the area. ATM caves, Xanantunich Mayan Ruins, Iguana Conservation Project in town and all day trip to Tikal in Guatemala.
How to get to Table Rock Jungle Lodge
San Ignacio is about 70 miles ( 112 km ) west from the Philip Goldson International Airport, which is a solid 2 hour drive. The easiest way is to pre-book a transfer. The are many companies, but the cost is similar around $100 for 2 people. You can book your transfer here.
You can also fly from Belize City to San Ignacio with Tropic Air. They have a couple of flights daily.
The cheapest, but the longest and least comfortable is taking the local bus. With many stops along the way it will take a while, but it sure is a local experience, if you are up for the adventure.
